Leaf spring clamps

Hello,

I just noticed today that after only a year the small clamps on my leaf springs are completely rotten and fell off in my hands.

I assume they are only in place to stop the leaves bending away from one another.

Are they really needed? since I cannot find replacements at Bull Motif. If yes, any tips for fashioning some new ones myself?

Thanks

Yes! I had a top leaf spring break on my traveller and the only thing that held the whole lot together was the clamps, it was a further 50miles up the motorway at the services when I realised what the funny noise had been and why it was handling weirdly.....

You could make new ones from some heavy steel bent to shape and a spouting bolt or similar accross the top.

picture of dodgy wheel with a broken top spring..... As you can see the wheels sitting about 3inches further back than it should be.
Image
I am considering taping mine in all the way, keeps the rust at bay and the clamps won't fall off.
