Flasher unit problem - on a Renault

Give me a Minor and an electrical fault, and I'll solve it in a few minutes; but this one on a Renault has got me stumped, so I'd welcome any ideas....

Firstly, the indicators and the hazards work perfectly, as do all the other electrical systems. All bulbs are OK. When the indicators are switched on, the flasher unit "ticks" at it's normal rate.

However, when the indicators are turned off (but ignition on) the flasher unit ticks at a much faster rate. Very irritating, and slightly worrying in that one wonders what is about to fail!. I have swapped the flasher unit with an identical unit from another vehicle. Thefault remains with the first vehicle.

Anyone got any ideas please?

Probably a fault with the immobiliser. My Discovery used to do it from time to time. The alarm and immobiliser was wired through the flasher unit so that it flashed the hazards when the alarm went off....

If its wired the same as a peugeot 406 (well they are both french) mine used to do this on and off and it turned out to be the indicator stalk faulty ??????? Try nudging the stick up or down without actually selecting a direction when its ticking to prove it.
