and she had the fastest idle in the west!

Try what I might, I need to set the idle at about 1600 rpm, or she simply cuts out approching junctions.....though I am now master of the bump start!

What could be the cause please?

Too much air entering the combustion process either due to a sticking carb piston or from air leaks around inlet manifold, carb etc.... The carb piston should drop firmly to the bottom with a thump. Also check you have thin oil (3 in 1 or similar) in the dashpot.

Does it do so even if you knock into neutral and coast up to the junction ? Could be clutch going too far down - and loading up the engine. But as above - you need to look at all the carb settings - and the igntion too!
