My new Morrie - part two

Post by bouncingoffthewalls »

well...
i am not driving her at the moment...

she is a little jumpy so am booking her in for a service and tune up...

also quick question about the clutch and gears...
first gear, the gear stick seems to go alot farther forward when in than in second - is this right or could there be a problem there??

also need to move the chair forward - ie drill new holes and re drill closer - as my legs dont reach enough!!

am hoping to get her serviced sooner rather than later and that i can start driving her soon!!

oh well...

any tips would be well appreciated..

oh and she seems to not rev enough when slowing down... every time i slowed to go round a corner she stalled...

and i had my brother in law mechanic drive her and do the same!

I assume you mean third gear rather than second? THats perfectly normal (if however you did mean second, you have REAL problems...)

Before drilling new holes, double check the seat is in the forwardmost holes and if you do need to drill, make sure that you have suitable re-enforcement so the seat couldn't rip out in an accident.,

The stalling could be a number of things, can you give any more details? Was the car fully warmed up? choke out etc?

sorry! yes i did mean third!!

when slowing down to turn a corner or if i had to stop it would stall.
No choke out.

i think i have ALOT to learn!!

but am still very excited...

my father in law told me he could think of better cars i could have bought for my money, but seriously i tried to think about what else i could have bought...
and even if i had like 10,000 or 20,000 i still would have bought a morrie!

nothing else better!!

As Dan mentioned the seats have different mounting holes and they always have enough adjustment for those with shorter legs.
What may have happened is that the drivers seat may have been changed for a passenger one as only drivers seats have an adjuster, I should check this first also its not unknown for them to seize up and a bit of greasing will soon have them working again, so have a look under the seat and let us know if you have an adjuster.
Cheers

i had the same problem with not being able to reach the pedals comfortably, i couldnt see over the steering wheel much either and everyone here was quite helpful, someone recommended some rubber raising blocks from esm, that combined with putting the seat on the front notch seemed ok for me so didnt need to drill any holes.

Check out the seat situation and let us know if you fix it.

Just to clarify, does the car stall when its warmed up? When its sat running with no choke what does the engine run quickly or slowly?

Hi Karen

I mentioned in an earlier post that there is a company in Oz that specialises in rubber replacement part for old cars, including Morries (or Moggies as our UK friends would have it). I have been assured that it is OK to mention their names, in the context that I have found them helpful. The one I was thinking of is --

scottsoldautorubber@bigpond.com

The Minor specialist in North Rocks, Sydney is called Morris Minor World--

morrisminorworld.com.au

Of course there are many other suppliers of parts for Morries in Oz. Perhaps you can find your local Morry Club for further help.

The West Australian club is at--
Morris Car Club of Western Australia Inc. PO Box 93. Gosnells WA 6110

And of course don't forget morrisdownunder.com

I hope this helps.

Be careful where you take it to be 'serviced' - it's easy to be ripped off. If your brother in law is a mechanic - get him to service it - and get involved yourself so you know how to do it next time. Stalling on slowing down could be many things - first step is to lift the idle speed, but also check there is some oil in the carb damper.
Did i send you the Workshop manual link ? If not - PM me.

She is reving to low i think... putt putt putt...

am only hitting 40 miles per hour... just!!

but she is getting better...

she has been sitting in a work shop for a while and i think she just needs to remember what driving is like!!

i took her around town today!!

was great!!

i didnt stall at all... but she seemed smoother than the other day...

so am going to get a really good service and tune and see if they pick up on any thing else....

thanks for the aussie links!!

and i have already downloaded the manual...

i also think that if i got the seats redone, the padding would push me up that little bit that i need so am not going to worry about moving the seat!!

so we are adjusting to life together and enjoying it so far!!

my kids love her!!

other names i have thought of are obi, and boo!!

It sounds like she needs "using" sometimes the petrol in the tank is a bit stale and a fresh tank can work wonders. Probably just needs the odd "tweek" here and there. Glad you enjoying her!

I have a friend sourcing a mechanic for me...
dont want to rely on my brother in law too much!!
He is a little bit too busy at the moment, but did offer to
help bleed the brakes!! so yippea there...

have ordered a new air filter, and a rocker cover gasket...
and a catalogue from the supplier mentioned above!! thanks heaps...

have also already contacted the Morris club of Western Australia... did
that the day after i bought the car!!

Okay this is my stupid question for the day...

should i only be reaching 40 mile an hour.... would really love to make it to 50 but am i dreaming!!

thanks guys for your patience!!

Hi Karen, assuming you have the smaller of the 2 engines for your year of car you should still be able to cruise easily about 60mph (top speed if you dare about 70mph)! There are a number of possibilities for a low top speed - sticking brakes, blocked air filter, incorrect timing, wrong carb fuel/air mixture setting, inaccurate speedo (you might be going faster than you think!!), incorrect valve clearances etc... or, may just need a service and running to loosen things off again. If however, yours was built with an 803cc or a sidevalve engine then you are probably going as fast as you can :-) What is the engine number? It should be on a small ally plate on top of the cylinder head at the front left of the engine (as you look at it from the front of car).

with a standard 1098 you should be able to around 70 mph but i find 60mph is very comfortable.

As identified by other posters I would think you have a problem with your carb.

You have the manual and most of the tests you need to perform on the carb do not need many tools.. even if you do not feel confident enough to fix the problems it might be nice to identify the problem.

These are the details from the badge under the hood

car number - 98714679258
engine number - 9MUH485726

would love to be able to diagnose problem, gives me a little cred
when presenting car to the mechanic who will assume i know nothing!!

she isnt loosing too much oil either!! so excited about that!!

thanks guys...

I suggest you download the workshop manual from "useful Tips" section. This should show you how.

well we went for a drive tonight... and the same thing happened again...

left car idling with choke on, we all walked around and admired her, oooooed and arrrrrred.... then she starts with not enough power, the dash lights are dimmed and putts along extraordinarily slowly and just about dies...

luckily i was near my brother in laws house, so pulled in there and got a lift home!!

i was so sad... and my ego was bruised...

my brother in law told me it was kind of like him and my husband going fishing and coming home without the fish!!

am so sad... things were looking bright...

hopefully its something easily fixed!!

but exactly the same thing happened friday, but it took her a couple of days to recover.. oh and my husband charged the battery over night!!

hmmmm....

no cruising for a couple of days...
