Hi

Is the oil leak coming from the crankshaft scroll oil seal this can be converted to a proper modern type oil seal which is more effective.

Have you replaced the oil pump ? how old is it maybe worthwhile putting a new one on if its worn or as old as the engine could it be warped.

Hope my ideas helped.

James :)

Check breather system is ok - excess crankcase pressure will blow oil out.

Of course it does- it's a labyrinth seal and only works when the crank is spinning. Oil comes out here if the engine crankcase has any internal pressure - you need to MAKE SURE one of the breathers is connected to the carb inlet to ensure the engine eats it's own fumes. However - if the engine is badly worn and much fume is escaping past the rings - there is obviously a limit to what it can cope with! Heavy over haul required! The leaking will have absolutely nothing to do with the oil pump - the idea that it could be 'warped' is certainly novel!

look like done it cleand all updde alittle smear of blue i the book says then changed the rocker cover put one on with a breather as well so now has 2 straight to the pancake
so been for a run to linford hall in munford fault i may still find the classic there but already gone
but thanks for the help
i just have never seen any thing like this before
and i am not willing to pay £70 plus for a convertion kit she can stay the way it was for years untill i get a bigger engine
cheers all chris

The conversion kit seals are not all that great. Rocker cover breather IS the best way forward - well done.

You should have a breather coming from the timing case cover - and now you have added one from the rocker cover. If your carb has a brss inlet at the side - connect one of the breathers - probably the rocker cover breather - to that inlet so the engine breathes in all it's own fume.

I agree with BMC the crank seals are trying to keep oil back on a rather rough finished surface.Unless the flywheel boss is machined as well I think they are at best a waste of time. These problems are nearly always caused by crankcase pressure not the ability of the scroll.

Unless the main bearings are badly worn - then the floods of oil are just impossible for the scroll to cope with!
