vin numbers help

Post by murph »

VIN NUMBER LOCATION, :(

Hi all .
i am looking to buy a moogy saloon in near future,
i am looking at 2 door saloons from 63 right up to 71 as i want to
do a convertable conversion for my daughter (keep her out of corsa`s!) :D
i have looked at a few cars but several dont seem to have any vin numbers stamped in shell just riveted on plates, so i walked away.
so where is the number?,i dont want to spend lots cash on conversion if i cannot find or prove my cars id if required later on.
Can i at least year date the car by looking at mouldings or trim numbers
as has been suggested by a local garage .
cheers in advance murph..... [/b]

The chassis nunber is stamped on the plate that is fixed to the bulkhead. Also, it should have the number part of this code stamped into the bulkhead just below this plate. Some cars had numbers stamped into the floorpans but these will probably have been replaced by now and also some on the bottom of the inner flitch to tie plate but again probably rotted away and been replaced. Dating is possible from trim etc but it is so specific I'd have to know what car you were looking at to date it accurately.... Remember when Minors were built the emphasis was not of VIN's as it is these days so don't expect the same levels as on new cars in terms of ID's....

vin number HELP

Post by murph »

Hi PSL.
ARH ! thats great ,thank you for that. :D
2 cars i looked at had large repair welds to floors etc.
this also put me off conversion as i needed a cleaner sronger shell for conversion .
I looked at a 1971 car and a 1963 car and there was not a lot in it condition wise apart from £££.
Apart from steering wheels and subtle trim changes both cars ran alternator conversions etc .
i will investigate further
thanks again

I don't see any reason why a 63 car should be any difference in price to a 71 car to be honest. Both should be 1098 engined cars and there is no real difference in value - its condition that is important !!!

Just make sure you get good paperwork with the car - bundles of old MOTs - that sort of thing. All Minors (except very few specialist 'show cars') will have had floor/sill/chassis welding done by now ! Post up your location in your Profile - there may be cars nearby that are for sale !
This one for example - http://www.mmoc.org.uk/index.php?name=P ... ic&t=23511 has may useful modifications built in !

hi all,
thats great .thanks for your tips every one,
i think i was praps expecting to much and need to look at the cars
more generally and if i can get a genuine-ish shell then will look for a car with a few nice little up-grades etc allready done.
i was shocked to find after reading on this site the amount of cars stolen hence promting the question .
the "lovejoy " replica project is still a goer.
