Seatbelt Mounting Points

Hi all, I'm wanting to fit inertia reel belts into my four door (front) and Im wondering where is the best place to mount them? I have a couple of Metro belts on there way to me so havent done any trial fitting as of yet. Im working on the understanding that the belts need to be vertical so the most promising point looks to be at the bottom of the b panel. Has anyone else fitted belts here? Or should I mount them on the inner sill? will they clear the seat? any thoughts would be most welcome thanks, Croft.

I used the original mounting points for my inertia belts although te buckles that go in the centre of the car have long wires on then to allow the old mounting points on the floor to be used. Not sure if Metro ones will be smaller so you may have to mount them further forward.

What year is your car? It may already have mounting points under the carpets.

I asked this same question a few months ago and the concensus of opinion was that the b post on a four door would'nt to strong enough, still looking at it though,thinking of welding a plate(Mines a 55) onto the sill and bottom of b post to mount the reel, The other side on the trans.tunnel is easy to do just a good spreader plate.Nobody seemed to have done an inertia system on a four door splitty,just the fixed type bolted to the bottom of the sill. will watch with interest

I want to fit front seat belts to my four door splitty. So please anyone... advice is needed..

yes dean so do I The problem is where to mount the free end of the drivers side of the belt ,you know the one that sits at shoulder height on modern cars and lets the belt slide through it. Ive looked at mine closely and can say that the B post is not very strong in this area,I have removed my traficator some time ago and closed off the outer slot,and looked at siting the upper mounting in this area ,but I don't think it would hold in a head on smash,mind anything is better than no belt at all so might just fit it and hope..The other ends are no problem cos you can reinforce the bottom of the B post and sill,and transmission tunnel. I think a two door might be doable since the B , post is part of the rear frame. I just can't see anyway of reinforcing the upper B post,other than putting a roll cage in,(think not) I'd like to have some sort of belt in mine but think I will have to go down the fixed type three fittings both drivers side on sill and other side on trans tunnel and put up with the inconvenience of sliding it over my shoulder . I spoke to the guy who does my mots and he says , if they are fitted they HAVE to be secure,so any flex he finds,or sees will result in a fail,Could just take them off for each mot of course.Just can't decide what to do really,when I first put the post on thought someone from the customised section would have done it on a turbo 150bhp series two split screen race car

I'm not familiar with the 4 door set up so I can't help with fitting, but, what we need is someone with a post '65 4 door to tell us how the factory got round the problem... Anyone got one ???

well i guess the 4 door is the same as a van front
the seatbelts were mounted on the inner cill step and top of b post around the trafficater area, on later ones
on the b post there is a theaded plate welded behind the b post

Does this render the trafficators useless though? I still wish to use mine....

Quite possibly as the traficators would have been replaced by flashing indicators once seat belt mountings came into production - didn't think of that

Best person to talk to may be RogerRust as his four-door had seatbelts fastened to the B-posts yet still had working trafficators. It can be done!

other than that have a look at some of the current mpv's as have threepoint seatbelts on removable seats

For what it's worth, my 4 door had a chromed steel plate bolted to the b-post. It was as long as the depth of the side windows and bolted at both ends. I fixed the top mount of my inertia belt to the top bolt. It was a '66 so didn't ever have trafficators but given the length of the plate it might have been designed for a car fitted with them too.
