Speedometer Chart.

I am trying to put together a complete listing of speedometers with the correct TPI and applications. I know the information is in various books but it is not all together or complete. I would also like to work off original information to avoid continuing any previous publishing errors.
Therefore if you could all check the speedos in your Minors, including MMs and early SIIs, Minis with Minor type speedos and any spares sitting on the shelf I would be most grateful. The information will be available on the website when it is ready. I require as much of the following info as possible:-
The serial no. ie SN4423/07 The TPI ie 1408
The max speed mph/kph on the dial
The vehicle it is fitted to or comes from and its diff ratio
The colour of the dial face, ie bronze or black
Comments etc

My car - although a 1098 1965 Traveller, came to me with a 4.55 diff and a black 90 mph speedo with 1508 tpm. The mileometer was VERY accurate (I do a regularity run) being good to 0.1 mile in a 10 mile run - on 155 x 14 tyres on standard rims.
I have now fitted a 3.73 diff - and a black face 90 mph (ex Mini) 1248 tpm speedo. I am expecting it to be accurate - but haven't done any worthwhile run (salt on roads!) to test it other than to check it works fine with no wild swinging etc.

I reccon your traveller was fitted with a 1098 van speedo.
Do you know the serial nos of the speedos?

I could go look them up - but it's cold and dark outside now !!!!!!!!!!!
The diff was obviously not original - the axle had a fill point - and so did the diff! Quite a few odd things about my Traveller - 3 spoke steering wheel for example - it is an ex (many years ago) Charles Ware car - so anthing is possible !!!!

1962 Traveller. 4.55 diff. Bronze speedo s/n 4477/00 1504tpi
Soon to fit a higher diff(wolseley 1500) to the retro fit 1098, but keen to keep the bronze face. Ideas??

Think I have a 4.55 diff, are there any identification marks? (not the original axle)

Gear ratio is stamped on the crown wheel of A series diff
On a MM type diff it is on the R/H axle tube

Well there are a couple of companies that can recalibrate speedo's to suit your running gear and we were reccommended one a couple of years ago which I cant remember but here is a starting point.

Speedo that came out of the car is SN 4423/00 tpm 1504 Black face Minor type 90 MPH and 150 Km/H markings. This was matched to a 4.55 diff and gave very accurate mileage readings on 155 x 14 tyres. Speedo now fitted (to match 3.73 diff) is Mini type SN 4421/00SA tpm 1248 Black face 90 MPH and 150 Km/H markings with extra green warning lamp at 12 o'clock - which means the '50' Mph marking is in smaller type than the other marks.
I also have in stock a Mini speedo SN 4421/12 tpm 1408 and otherwise as the other Mini speedo.
Note with Mini speedo you need to relocate the voltage regulator bracket, and the side brackets need to be modified inwards to 5" spacing to allow the Speedo to slide into the Minor dash fittings. It's easy to do - only takes minutes! I used the Mini voltage regulator and fuel gauge since they were already on the speedo - they work fine with the Minor fuel tank sender.

Also on the mounting flange of the casing (A series diff) which saves taking it out to see the crown wheel. Just need to clean off paint / goo to see the numbers.

Many thanks to the people who have taken the time to reply to this topic but in order to produce a chart that will enable anyone to choose a suitable speedo for their car I need you all to take 5 mins to note down the information on your speedometers, particularly SIIs and 948s and vans/pickups

The original speedo I listed will have come from a 948 car - with the 4.55 diff. I have a speedo from a later J reg car with 4.22 diff - it's in the garage loft, and in this weather I ain't getting the car out so I can get into the loft!!!
