Midget Gearbox

Post by Lukey »

I have I been given a gearbox, it's from a 1275 minor that was immediately sent for restoration and returned to it's original specification, he can't tell me anything about it apart from it works OK.

I seem to remember that they are the same box but are stronger am I correct? I need to identify the box, it looks the same but has a shorter gearstick with a teardrop shaped gear knob and it also has a Lockheed setup if that helps.

Yes - Spridget gearbox has better bearings on the mainshaft. Should have a reverse light switch fitted. I assume the 'Lockheed etc' refers to a hydrauilic actuator ? You can change the operating lever for a Minor one - and revert to good old mechanical actuation.

Look after it. Parts for spridget boxes are getting very scarce.

When my 1275 box was repaired I was advised to look after it as parts were scarce. Just passing on those words of wisdom.

Agreed Mike there have been concerns about spares for the 1098cc gearboxes as well for a while now (not sure if this applies to the 948 as well) I know the club were looking into it but I dont know if any progress has been made and I am sure this applies to the 1275 box as well unfortunately.
Cheers
