I was browsing through eBay looking at nothing in particular when I noticed a chrome locking petrol cap for a Mini that looked exactly like the ones I had on my Minis. It also looked VERY similar to the cap on my MG and on my '69 4-door Moggy. As it was only up for a fiver, I thought it might fit my Traveller!

So, I took the one off my MG and tried it on my '69 Moggy. No chance! the external diameter is smaller and the internal locking mechanism is bigger. OK, so I thought I'll try them both on the Traveller! no chance with either of them as the locking mechanism on the traveller seems to be on the outside of the pipe and not the inside like the MG and '69.

The end of the MG's pipe is formed to take a locking petrol cap, but the end of the pipe on the '69 moggy has a large aluminium looking ring on it (presumably some sort of adapter)?

So, am I going to have difficulty in obtaining a locking petrol cap for the traveller and is the external type standard? or is there a difference between Travellers and saloons?

I would also like one (eventually) for the '52 but I don't know what fitting THAT has got?

You would think that being as they are all BL cars they would all be the same.............but OH no!

cam i dont recall any difference in the fittings between the saloon and traveller. the ring came with the locking cap and was screwed to the original fitting. ive got a number of these locking cap but i have also got a big collection of keys, which one goes in where i dont know.

I think the LCVs are external locking - but then I'd have to check. I know the van I have has a locking cap but its locked on (and I have no key) so I'm not sure how it locks - I can check my pickup tho.

If you are really lucky it is with the same key as the ignition - However it is not the case with the aftermarket locking petrol caps.

Have "Waso" locking caps fitted to both saloon & Traveller. Both the same and fit perfectly. Is it just a matter of obtaining the correct adaptor ring for the Minor filler pipe and the actual caps are all the same?

You can replace the feed tubes with mini ones easily, as there are more internal locking petrol caps around than external locking ones. And they're harder to break into.

Mini tanks are upright and the tube is VERY short and welded onto the tank (if memory serves) or are you on about estate / van ones?

Yeah, sorry, estate ones, like off the Mini Clubman estates and such. The pipe can be cut off of the old mini tank and joined in a similar way in a minor with the piece of fabric joing pipe,

Thanks for that mate! I'll keep an eye out for a mini estate / van in the local scrappy. Mini locking caps seem to be a LOT easier to get than Moggy ones!

I bought a Mini cap a short time ago hoping to convert mine for only 50p in great condition with key.

Also, I can't remeber totally, but the rubber seal round the pipe where it connects to the bodywork might be a slightly diffrent size/thickness so you may want to take that off with you aswell just to make sure you have a good seal onto the bodywork.
