Back at last...

Post by wiglaf »

I've been offline for a fair while, moving house (Sleipnir now has a cosy garage rather than a damp driveway!) and changing jobs.

Way back in October I was planning to sort out my very optimistic, as well as sticky, speedo by sending to the instrument makers, but someone (BMCeccosse I think) suggested I checked it matched up with the diff properly.

The tpm number on the speedo is 1504.
The diff is, to the best of my knowledge, completely standard for the car (a 948), therefore... 4.55? Can anyone advise on what numbers will be printed on it where to indicate this?

Tyres* are normal 145 firestones.

Thanks guys, once I've changed the speedo cable and had lunch I'll start reading back over the last three months of posts and probably find the answers to my questions anyway!

Cheers

Wiglaf

*tyres and wheels being different things... oops

I think to allow someone to answer your question they will also need to know the side wall hight of the tyres..

Your tyres should have written on them something like 145 R14 / 80 or 145 R14 / 70 if you do not have have a number after the R14 this i think means that they have a side wall of 63% ( no doubt someone will correct me on this )

so I was wrong about the default tyre hight, I was also incorrect about the order they are written as it should be 145/80 R14 or 145/70 R14.

so two bits of info two bits wrong...i'll get my coat

Yes - 1504 speedo is for a 4.55 diff. Plenty about for very little money - so just buy another speedo. But the 'stickiness' may be in the cable if it's running dry.

Seriously - a speedo will be ~£5 tops. Sending it away will be MUCH more! Consider changing to a higher final drive ratio - for better eceonomy - then you will need a different 'tpm' speedo anyway!

... I think it's probably fair to say that those who said "it'll be the cable" are right...

Just a little... um... yes... unhappy down the bottom before joining the gearbox. No chance of dirt getting in there and jamming it up or anything no siree!

My 'new' speedo was from ebay - ex Mini. It cost less than £5 including post - and has 1248 tpm will be fine for a 3.73 diff car on standard 14" wheels and 155 tyres. If I was bothered I could have fiddled the mileage reading round - or turned it back to zero. But since I don't think the speedo in my car was the original anyway (in fact I'm sure it's not!) the mileage reading really doesn't matter to me ! What does matter is that it will read accurate mileage and speed with the new diff!
