Exhaust Wrap

Hello Everyone.
Ive just been reading one of the many classic car mag`s that I have bought this week and in most of them is a advert for Exhaust Insulation Wrap.
It sounds a good product, has anyone got this on there car or is it just a good PR stunt?.

I know they use it on rally cars Paul, but I have not seen it on a Moggie, are you thinking it might assist fuel starvation problems during hot weather

I have seen it on a couple of modifieds (100+ BHP) and to be honest I think it's a bit unnecessary. Unless you are suffering with excessive under bonnet heat then I would not bother.

It does a good job of cutting down heat given off from the exhaust.
This has two benefits in theory. The first is that the colder the engine bay is, the denser the air going into the engine will be. However this can be a proble with carbs because they can ice if they get too cold (hence the water heated inlet manifolds).
The second benefit is due to keeping the heat in the exhaust it has more energy so will travel faster (not sure of all the dynamics).
The down side is the wrap can cause your manifold to crack and corrode faster. This is not a problem on a limited mileage ultimate performance car.
The main reason I would put wrap on a car is for heat management.
You can also get similar products for insulating pipes in industrial applications and because it is not motorsport it costs about 20% the amount.
