It's on an A-Series engine that came out of a minor, and from external appearances it looks just like a normal cylinder head.
I'll take piccies tomorrow when it is light ... its currently still on the block of the engine that came out of my very first minor, which unfortunatley died not long after I bought it ... it had problems ever since I bought it after the bloke who I bought it off drove it over to deliver it to me and claimed he had it going at 90mph all the way - undoubtedly the original cause of its problems.
I guess it might be worth me spending some time to whip the head off the block so I can take pics of the 'inside' ... I've been meaning to take it apart since it first died so that I could find out what happened, but as ever other things got in the way and the complete engine has sat in my back garden wrapped in plastic ever since.

Whip the head off and take a picture of the combustion chambers. I may have seen a head with a similar casting number on it, it had circular combustion chambers.
Wheres BMCecosse when you need him!!

Any clues like double valve springs?

OK, curiosity got the better of me so here are some very blurry pics taken with my mobile phone and a torch,
The head casting number:
The head itself has a bit of surface rust, but it looks like it will come of with a soft wire brush:
And for good measure a pic of the block casting number:

From looking at it first hand the number is B 31 H7

agreed looks like a standard head... are you sure there are no other numbers hiding under the rocker gear?
Do you know what CC engine it is?

1098 as far as I am aware, i never really got chance to drive it properly since the engine was in trouble from the first day I got it.
In the middle of the head there is the number CAM4810

The mini forums suggest this is probably a standard 998 head from an A+ engine ... is there anywhere else on the block that I can look for an alternate number that may describe what IT is, the number I have found doesnt turn up very much info, but given my success in locating the right casting number for the head it's entirely possible I'm looking at the wrong number on the block itself!

It looks like a very ordinary (and extremely rusty) head to me - if it's from a 998 Mini (very likely ) then the inlet valves are really too small for a 1098 engine - but ok for a 948. It's certainly not anything to get excited about!
From the general rusty state of the rockers (which are not recent Mini type) - I would be worried about the condition of the engine internals! Take the head off for an inspection.

Internally I would imagine that it is stuffed given the noises and clouds of smoke it was making before I took it off ... with rust added to the equation is it likely to be worth anything more than weighing it in?

Depends what exactly happened to it and how much it has rusted internally since. Might be a good candidate for a rebuild if it hasn't failed too catastrophically.

Don't scrap it - someone will want it even if you don't!

When it died it did sound pretty catastrophic ... most likely a piston failure from the clattering noises it was making ... I'll take the head off and have a look at some point but if anyone wants it them PM me as it is just taking up space & getting rusty ... i already have a working spare so this is no use to me at all.

CAM4810 is an awful head, smaller valves and awful porting compared with the standard 12g202 head. The only redeming feature is that some were unleaded.
Fitted to A+ minis and metros

Just recently - AC Dodd was extolling the virtues of the CAM 4810 head !!!!!!! Personally - I think it's a disaster - but for a 948 engine, for pottering about - it would be ok.

Well it is on it's way to a new home ... alex and I have already decided to go halves on a 5 litre tub of hammerite magnolia, and he wants to remove the junk engine from my back yard at the same time ... as a bonus he is hooking me up with someone who will shot-blast some rims for me ... I beilive that is what you call a win/win
