Its probbably Me just being inept

, but im having trouble fitting the oil pump i was sold for a 1098. The pump fits to the block ok and has the correct drive to fit on the end of the camshaft. However when i try to put on the backplate the top left corner of the oilpump fowls the cover. I was assured by the shop it would fit although it is slightly deeper. could this be a pump from one of the other a series variants.
If it is the wrong pump am i within rights to take it back and exchange it (the shop is a bit funny about this they say you should check it before you fit it)
Also can you get the tabwashers for thew oil pump. Mine has lost 2 of its tabs but i cant seem to find one anywhare.
Cheers

Edd,
Sorry, I haven't fitted a pump myself - but
If you asked for an oil pump for a 1098 Minor, you should get what you paid for. Since you bought this forma a shop, you can use section 15 of the Sale of Goods Act (Implied Terms) - basically if you asked for an oil pump for a 1098cc Moggy, and what you were sold isn't right, then it's a breach of contract. You're entitled to the money back.
Try your local trading standards office as well.
Remember, though, that the shop doesn't have to serve you, so this may be a last resort.
Luck,
Colin

EDD, since you obviously have taken off the old pump then
why not take it back to the shop to show them that it is
different to the one which they supplied. Goods must be
fit for the purpose for which they are sold so there is no
argument in law if they gave you the wrong type.

I had this fouling problem too. The cause is that the new pump is 'universal' and has castings for two, three and four bolt small block A-series oil pump fixings. My 1098 original pump had a 3 bolt fixing, one at the top of the triangle. The new pump has catings for a four bolt square pattern fixing, and the two top holes for th e four bolt square fixing fouled the engine backplate. I considered taking it back but thought I might get a replacement pump with the same problem, since in essence it is the 'right' pump.
Of course, examining the backplate against the gasket and block, if Morris had placed the oil pump 'power bulge' in alignment with the block machining this would not be a problem. But there you go. The solution is straightforward. Simply grind back the two unused top corners of the square until the backplate fits.
One word of caution: on my pump, the four corners used a step each to locate the backplate on the pump. This is important because the backplate is the rear bearing for the pump shaft. Fortunately a screw held the backplate relative to the pump, and I found that the corners could be ground to clear the backplate without completely removing the location steps.
On pump depth, I have a thick backplate (about 10mm). There was no depth problem with the new pump. But I have heard that engines with a thin backplate have to get the correct pump to avoid depth problems.

Always prime an new oil pump before fitting it.
