Try fresh lemon juice. All varnish will need to be removed first though.
Really works a treat

I needed to blend in the new wood with the old - Domestos worked well for me, just be carefull and don't oversand once bleached as the wood tends to go go darker.

be careful with any bleah on hardwoods, as the bleach can destroy the cell structure if not used properly
be kind to timber and use lemon juice

You will need about 6 fresh lemons, squeezed. Simply apply by brush leave overnight and be amazed at natures work. You may need to repeat the process for badly stained areas.
When fully dry sand back the surface and apply Cuprinol 5 star to kill any lingering fungi and prevent future spores. Let this soak in well, maybe a few coats, especially in cracks and joints.
Good luck, and don't worry if the wood looks yellow'y afterwards, it will sand off.
