Has anybody got any tips how to remove the outer spring ring on the layshaft. Smashed the needle roller cage thinking it would be easier to get this clip out. Needed to replace needle rollers.

I think (many years ago now) I just winkled it out! Is it not a circlip ??

No its not a circlip but flat spring clip that fits into a groove. The layshaft has got 4 of these springs - 2 inner and 2 outer and the needle roller cage goes between them. I have been told that you dont have to put the outer one back on

Hmmm sounds unlikely. I would have thought they should be internal circlips -and i would put back ALL.

They are spring clips or circlips without the removal holes! The ends taper to a point which enable you to get behind with a thin blade, then work your way round, alternatively if the bearing is u/s a sharp tap with a flat punch, near one end of the circlip will dislodge it inwards. Yes put them back if original. but the latest needle bearings are longer and so the circlip is not used.

Thanks Les you describe the clips perfectly. I will give that a go.
