Yes the first digit or two should be the engine size, 8=803cc, 9=948 and 10= 1098

If it begins with 8 it could also be a factory recon ;)

What year is the car?

A 948 cc engine has '950' cast into the block on the manifold side - low down towards the front. A 1098 engine should have a little aluminium plate there with 1100 stamped on it. And a 1275 engine has no tappet covers!

1098 & 1275 engines have a thick steel backplate, 948 has a thinner back plate curved over around the edges.

That's true - but a 1098 (or 1275) engine could be fitted as a replacement for a 948 - and retain the thin backplate.

If you've got a picture of it, that'll probably help us (or more likely the rest of the members of the board) identify it (unless it's an SV, a 1098 or a 1275 A+ I'm not likely to spot it) :)

I didn't know that, I've only ever seen one factory recon unit, which was an 803!
