sudden cut out of all power

Post by youngb506 »

Yesterday, on the way to work, there was a sudden and momentry loss of power in my 1958 Minor 1000. It only lasted a second and then things were fine. Outside thge garage at the end of the day the same thing happened but this time because the car was idling the engine cut out and didn't re start. The lights came back on after a couple of seconds and I started the car easily again.

I'd guess there's some major loose conection somewhere but if anyone could give me an idea of where to look before it happens again withe morte lasting consequences, I'd be very greatful.

Hi, try the fuel pump connections - earth lead in particular. I've had this trouble, vibration loosening things a bit. Also check points on your pump - may need cleaning/are starting to wear. Hope this helps.

Had cutting out problems caused by the ignition switch rotating slightly. A quick turn of the key and I can usually catch it before it stalls.

If the lights went out -and engine stop - then probably bad connection at the battery - either terminal. Or - could be a major short circuit - because engine running at decent speed would keep the volts up from the dynamo. A short circuit would kill everything. Is the battery holding bracket well clear of the terminal posts ?

Gearbox to chassis earth, or battery connections I would say.
