hello has any one got a humber hawk if so what cc are they how much to the gallon and do they have any bad points ,,grandad

Well -my Dad used to have one - just over 2000 cc -ancient engine design - expect ~ 20/25 mpg. I polished that car till it sparkled ! RUST is the bad point i'm afraid - and serious lack of spares I imagine!

Indeed, and minors rust badly, but other marques are far worse, such as old vauxhalls and BMWs!

well they all rust so some times make do and mend to the best we can . i am very lucky i have a mate who is a welder by trade and his dad is an excellent mechanic /classic car restorer now retired well till he comes here. ,,grandad

The later ones seemed to, however the 50's Minors I've had were usually much better.

An old friend of mine had a couple of Hawks. Very reliable old cars they were too, but when he needed to do any repairs on their bodies he had to make up his own panels as replacements are just unobtainable.

The Hawk/Snipe/Imperial range are a superb drive, especially the Imperial, they just have poor parts supply, a shame really.

all engines about 25 mpg, that is four pot to six pot. my friend seems to buy another humber every year he likes them so much.
bodywork is a little difficult to get hold of, but mechanical bits are fairly easy to get.

Well I would have thought it depends on your driving conditions where I live and drive a MK1 Cortina would be doing well with that sort of consumption, and the Humber is a far heavier car although really smooth around here I wouls expext 18-20 to be the norm.

I inherited my grandad's Hawk about 20 years ago. It was the last of his fleet (he used to run a 'posh taxi' firm in Ilford.) and he'd run it for years. Quite a 'padded' ride, bit like a Discovery - column gearshift and yes, closer to 20 to the gallon even with gentle driving (though that was in mountainous Wales) Bad rust round the rear wheel arches. Didn't keep it that long, too big for us!

Agreed, my '53 is remarkably sound, the only rot being where mud was left on and where it sat for 30 plus years in a damp garage, where the inner sill meets the domed wheel arch and inner sill and a nasty patch on the chassis leg. The rest is sound as anything!
