Does anyone know if there was a BMC dealer in Southend during the late 60s named Tippers & co? Having checked current motor trade websites they don't seem to exist anymore. Both my Minor's numberplates
(white & yellow but with raised numerals) have the company name embossed on the plates .

Tippers make the numberplates and still exist today. The Southend morris dealer was Stewart and Arden Ltd. They supplied my minor in 1969.

Alex - Thanks for the info about the BMC Southend dealer. I guess they supplied my car as well ( in March 1969 ). I don't suppose your car's registration also started with RHJ ?

Alex - mine is RHJ910G, registered 7 days before yours ! I'm it's eighth owner since 1977. THe previous 2 owners lived in London, so it hasn't moved very far in the last 33 years. Is your car still on the road ?

Yes its still used only in the summer though.I bought it from someone at college for spares for another minor in 1990 & decided to rebuild this one instead as it was much better. Its had about 8 owners as well 3 of those from the same family.
I am booked in for Harewood again do you go to any MMOC rallies

Alex, I would like to visit Harewood but I can't because I'm working that weekend. The club has arranged the rally when I've had to work for 3 years running! I'll get there one day, although not dressed up as a cowboy.
I'll let you know when I'm next able to go to a local rally so we can re-unite the cars for a photo.

TIPPERS were/are a company making number plates; I bought a pair of 'period' plates (1951) from them in 1991 although I they weren't in Southend itself:

G.TIPPER & CO.LTD.,
Sign & Number Plate Manufacturers,
20, Benfleet Rad.,
BENFLEET,
Essex,
Tel: 01702-553225/553228

They covered a wide range of eras and the work was first class. You might want to check on www.yell.com first though, as they might have moved.

I have discovered that the address I offered for Tippers is no longer valid.
However, the following may well be the updated version as it is not too far distant from the last; also, the gentleman there to whom I spoke in 1991 said that he was approaching retirement:

Peter Tipper,
Signmakers,
33, Purdey's Industrial Estate,
Purdey's Way,
ROCHFORD,
Essex,
SS4 1ND Tel: 01702-549830

Fascinating posts vilebrequin - thanks. I guess Tippers are a family business.

Weird how the order of the posts has been mixed up! As you can see I started this thread 4 years ago.

Update on TIPPER'S number plates:

There is an ad. in the June 2006 issue of CLASSIC & SPORTSCAR:

TIPPER'S VINTAGE PLATES,
33, Purdey's Way.
Rochford,
Essex,
SS4 1ND 01702-549830 fax: 549831.

The Company was started in 1932 and offers eight styles of plates from 1894 onwards. It appears that Mr. Tipper (senior) runs this side of the business, while the modern aspects are covered separately within the same premises.

Interesting! Maybe I'll send my plates there for reconditioning when I give my car a makeover. :P

Of course Mr Tipper (Senior) may be long retired by the time the makeover actually happens!
