Hi All

Can anyone advise what is going wrong - the brake pedal on my 61 2 door saloon has started to stick down when pressed, when you take your foot off the pedal it does not come up all the way and release the brakes, this does not happen all the time just a few times a day, if you quickly put your foot underneath the pedal and lift it the last inch or so this takes the brakes off.

There is a return spring for the brake pedal which usually rots away and/or falls off. You could check if this is still attached, although, I have driven many Moggies without the spring and they don't usually stick down. I suspect maybe there is some air in the system and/or some faulty seals... Possibly within master cylinder.

check that the pedal is'nt sized on the shaft going through from the clutch,does the clutch pedal move when you press the brake? otherwise check if spring is'nt broken as per previous post regards glyn

Thats what happened to my old Traveller, the pedal was siezed to the shaft. It meant removing the gearbox cover to get to it and spraying it with plenty of WD40 while working the pedals to free it off.

broken return spring and pedal stuck on clutch shaft are good suggestions.
The only additional one I can think of is a very rare one! I've seen one where the brake pedal touched the gearbox floor cover when pressed. Over many years the floor wore a groove in the pedal and that eventually caused it to stick.

you can fit a grease nipple to the moving part of the pedal shaft by drilling and tapping to suit grase nipple it does help when you get it going.you can also pump in light oil regards glyn

Thanks all, sorry to sound thick but to check the return spring am I looking inside or outside the car?
Also will check if clutch pedal moves when I press brake pedal tomorrow, like I said this does not happen all the time, maybe 2 presses out of 20.

The return spring is inside the car but it is under the inspection cover you see around the master cylinder. You need to remove the carpets and inspection cover and look behind the pedal along the inside of the chassis rail....

I've never had one that didn't!! (except for ones I fixed later)
When they are screaming for attention you will find that the clutch pedal stays on the floor when you are braking heavy and down shifting. Releaseing the brake for a moment releases the clutch pedal. In this condition it really needs stripping and greasing and maybe new bushes (but possibly a new shaft )
