Just been reading an article in an old practical motorist mag. circa july 1961,about how to look after a morris minor convertable, and thought there looks to be loads of adverts on full pages,so counted them up,then did the same on a new practical classic mag... 1961 119 pages 78full page adverts. 2008 170 pages 76 pages of adverts. So actual articles were 41 pages in 1961 94 pages in 2008. More than double ,price in 1961 one shilling and six pence... seven and a half pence ,price 2008 £3.99p So which was the better value.mmmm.

The value of one shilling and 6 in 2008 is as follows:
£1.20 using the retail price index
£1.22 using the GDP deflator
£2.71 using the average earnings
£3.27 using the per capita GDP
£3.78 using the share of GDP
You're currently getting 229% of what you used to get. So price for the magazine (when taking account of page increase) works out as:
£2.74 using the retail price index
£2.79 using the GDP deflator
£6.20 using the average earnings
£7.48 using the per capita GDP
£8.65 using the share of GDP
So relative to price increases it is less value but we're all earning more now and as a percentage of your earnings it is much cheaper. Make up your own minds
Also, got to consider the amount of information on each page, does it contain the same amount? How many letters? How large is the font? How many pictures? Has writing style changed and is the efficiency of the language as good, or as bad, as it used to be?
