Glad to here it! For the heater - fit an 88 dgree thermostat and make sure the pipes are not kinked, and make sure the heatyer valve is fully open and not just stuck half-way. You can also re-position the intake hose (elephant's trunk) so it draws in pre-warmed air from just behind the top of the radiator. Final tip - but a bit more work - is to eliminate the bypass hose - this helps the heater to provide warmth earlier in the journey - and also when idling in traffic! If you need more air - then get a Mini heater and fit that. It has a much bigger fan (effectively twice the Minor fan) - and the front plate from the Minor heater swaps straight over so it looks just the same inside the car.

Was I dreaming, or did someone say something about fitting bigger bore heater pipes, if so, how would they adapt?

I believe later Minis and metros had larger bore rubber feed pipes. Can't see that helping much - the entry to the Minor matrix is still the same size (late Minis had fancy two speed heater which may have had larger matrix pipes - and probably same for metro) and the delivery /return points on the engine are still going to be the original small size.
Edit - Here's the later 'large bore' take-off point for the back of the cylinder head. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mini-CYLINDER-HEA ... 240%3A1318

brakes/heater

Post by StaffsMoggie »

Glad all is going well Grandad, Wolseley 1500 brakes do make a difference it must be said. As for heaters, the one in my saloon was always lukewarm until I put a 92 degree thermostat in the engine. That really warmed things up. The Birmingham Minor Centre sell these. They do say that in the summer the stat might need replacing with an 88 degree one but I have not needed to. The engine never overheats.

It is well worth taking the heater out and flushing it out with a hosepipe. Flush it through in one direction until the water goes clear then flush it the other way. You will be surprised how much brown rusty water comes out! Also check that the seals round the heater matrix are in good condition otherwise the incoming air will just go round the matrix instead of going through it and being warmed.

Yep. And give it a good shaking while you are at it. A good Minor heater is quite adequate in my experience - and I'm one of the skinny ones that feels the cold.

Hope you had chance to have a look at your heater, a good flush through with a hose usually makes a big difference. Minor heaters throw out reasonable heat if the matrix is clear and the seals are good.

Like most 50s and 60s cars the blower motor isnt very powerful, a motor from a mini heater might fit, or you can fit a complete mini heater, I did that on my last Minor.
