I have been away for 2 days as a guest of Ford, Castrol, M Sport. M Sport for those not knowing is the company owned by Malcolm Wilson (rally driver), that builds the current ford rally cars.

I have had a seriously good time.

I have had a tutored drive in a Fiesta ST group N rally car, it was good fun.

A trip round the factory and museum, very impressive stuff. The M Sport museum was great with period rally cars that you could touch if you wanted. Even a 1999 focus that Colin Mcrae won in! The workshop was far too tidy and didn't have a single lift in it. they build the cars at the same height that they maintain them.

An afternoon at a rally stage in a cumbrian forest with the team.

A passenger ride in this:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2EycQBaan08&hl ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2EycQBaan08&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

We were allowed full access, no restriction hardly at all. We talked to the mechanics, driver and the team. It was very interesting.

The car had just come back from a rally and is a current focus team car, not a publicity car.

The driver was Jari-matti latvala, currently 4th in the driver standings so quite good. The passenger seat ride round the stage was totally amaizing. Over 100mph sideways on a gravel track surrounded by hills and trees is very scary and exhillerating.

I found it almost illogical how the car accelerated and braked on gravel. I haven't experienced anything else like it, even on roads in fast cars.

It was a totally brilliant experience.

I saw a program on TV about he building of such cars and think it was the same company.
They basically strip a brand new car down to every seperate panel, strengthen / lighten and then reassemble.
"Works of art" - and cost as much

Wilson seems to have rather dominated the Roger Clark rally too!

Didn't have to kill anyone. Felt like I was going to dye though!

I won it for buying a quantity of Ford 5w30 from my rep and being enterred in a draw with castrol.

It was a once in a lifetime, money can't buy experience, and I am very gratefull.

Whch workshop was it? I got to see the Ford WRC place in Boreham (Essex) before it was relocated elsewhere - I thought it ended up at Dunton.

M Sport's home is Dovenby Hall near Cockermouth in Cumbria.
