Some products are recommeded to be stored in a cool and dry area. The Moggy is now stored for the winter in a cool and dry Swedish barn. I'm already wondering if it will start in the spring. If the battery is dead by then - can an old British car with + earth be started using jumper cables? I suppose I would cause severe damage if I would connect a modern car plus to plus and minus to minus?

If the battery is fully charged now and disconnected it should still have enough in it to start a moggie even after 6 months (assuming a good battery). If not you can always use the starting handle....

I suggest you remove the battery - and keep it somewhere where it won't freeze (and burst the case -spreading acid all over the crossmember! ) - and give it a trickle charge once a month. You must always connect +ve to +ve and -ve to -ve no matter what 'earthing ' arrangement applies. Just make sure the two cars don't touch.
For 'laying up' - make sure the hand brake is OFF, block the car up so weight off the tyres (or inflate to ~ 40 psi) - take the spark plugs out and squirt some engine oil down the bores - then turn it over a couple of turns by hand - then loosly refit the plugs - and shove an oil soaked rag up the exhaust pipe to keep moisture out. Even with all that - there is a risk the brakes will stick ON, and the clutch plate may also stick to the flywheel. Also make sure small furry animals can't get in and start nesting! However it is a good idea to leave the windows open just a small amount to allow a little air to circulate.

I know a couple of owners who do this using the solar powered trickle charges during the winter with success.
