Hi all
Does anyone know where I can get a 7/16th square bar to take out the drain plug on the back axle

You can get a set of square and hex adaptors that fit in a socket (usually 3/4" AF) from motor accessory shop or maybe Halfords?

Alternatively I made one from one of those little square rods that goes between two household door handles, welded to a piece of angle iron as the handle.

I found the 3/8" square drive from one of my socket sets worked well enough. It was a bit loose - but no danger of it slipping. The plug was VERY tight in my axle - but it came out ok.

I've done that a few times but if it's especially tight, the undersize square will make matters worse by trying to spread the square out.

I've now got a multiple set of drive pieces that fit a 19mm socket - not expensive if you can shop around some of the online DIY/tool suppliers (if you order enough stuff to qualify for free delivery... I add oil, grinder disks etc... if needed but one of them now has reduced to >£10 = free delivery!)

I ground an old 1/2" drive short extension to the correct size, slightly tapering it. Works a treat.

Yes Halfords do both the universal drain plug spanner

But your local motor factor or accessory shop should also keep them.

I like the Halfords comment that it fits 'most sizes' - but doesn't detail what they are!

Hi Tweedy, I bought an 11mm square axle drain plug key from my local motor factor for £3.45, and it works fine. A 3/8" socket drive fits on the back.<br><br>

I've got the same type as Tingo, but in a set of 5 on a round pin... for less than twice the price of that one. Can't for the life of me remember exactly where I got them though!

Hi Ray - I could have had a set of 7 for a tenner, but I'll never use the other 6. I don't mind paying my local shop a bit extra. Have you ever been to a chain store and asked for a square thingy for the axle oil? Well worth an extra quid for the translation service!

I've looked in screwfix and toolstation catalogue's and they don't have that type - so as mentioned I am at a loss to find out where I got mine.
I got the set because I have the pleasure of working on loads of different cars (friends / relatives / my own) and have had to beg and borrow square drive adapters in the past - I hate having to borrow tools as it's missing an opportunity to buy them instead

Just printed it out, I will go round the shops tomorrow and see what happens, dont know what the oil or whatever is in it is like but its making no noise. ( or should I leave it ) anyway thanks and I will have a go.

Got a ESM catalogue today and there is a universal one in the catalogue £3:95p so I will go for that, I dont know what else it fits but it looks a big un so thanks to all for replying to my message no doubt I will be back on here again.
