HELP

JUST GOT A MOGGIE FOR THE FIRST TIME AND I CAN NOT GET IT RUNNING AT ALL,
THE PREVOIUS OWNER TOOK THE DISTRIBUTOR OUT AND NOW I AM STRUGGLING.
ENGINE WILL TURN OVER WELL ON STARTER BUT IOL PESSURE GUAGE SHOWS GOOD OIL PRESSURE AFTER WINDING FOR A WHILE.

IT HAS HAD NEW CAP, LEADS, POINTS, PLUGS, CONDENSER COIL, ETC ETC.
NO SPARK AT ALL.

SHOULD THERE BE A SPARK FROM THE COIL WIRE IF HELD TO THE BLOCK WHEN THE ENGINE IS TURNED OVER.

CAN ANYONE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT TO DO IN TOTAL DIM SPEAK BIT BY BIT WITHOUT LEAVING ANY DETAIL OUT NO MATTER HOW SMALL SO THAT EVEN A OMPLETE MORON LIKE ME CAN\'T GO WRONG.

SHOULD THE VACCUMM BIT POINT UPWARD AND WHERE IS 1 ETC ETC.
I HOPE SOMEONE CAN HELP ME PLEASE AS I AM ABOUT READY TO SET THE THING ON FIRE, I JUST CAN\'T WORK OUT WHAT I AM DOING WRONG

MANY THANKS

Welcome to the forum! Don't panic - this can be fixed. Yes - there should be a spark if you hold the HT lead from the coil close to the block - and crank it, with ignition ON of course.
First check - is there power going to the coil when the ignition is turned on ? And is there a wire running from the other side of the coil - to the terminal on the dizzy ? If so - then you need to look at the points and condenser inside the dizzy - and look for any obvious place where they could be 'earthing' out. Hard to describe how they should be - look in the Manual.

HI
THANKS FOR THE REPLY.
I WILL HOLD TH HY WIRE CLOSE TO THE BLOCK WITH THE IGNITION ON. IF I DON'T GET A SPARK THEN I AM ASSUMING THAT EITHER I HAVE DESTROYED THE COIL ALREADY OR I AM NOT GETTING POWER TO THE COIL CORRECTLY. HOW MANY WIRES SHOULD PUSH ON TO THE COIL TOP. I ASK AS EVERYTHING WAS DISCONECTED, I ALSO SEEM TO HAVE A SPARE WIRE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT GOES TO THE MIDDLE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR IS THIS CORRECT.
THANKS

You should have a wire that powers the coil when the ignition is on on one side of the coil, and a wire that goes from the other side of the coil to the side of the distributer (and thence to the points). Then there should be a high tension lead from the coil to the centre of the distributer cap. Any other small leads would only be there if you have a rev-counter fitted, (that would be connected to the points side.)

Should be 12 volt wire to coil +ve connection - and a wire on the coil -ve connection that should then connect to the terminal on the side of the dizzy. Also - wire to the oil pressure switch - and another to the oil filter switch. Also two wires (one thick/one thin) to the dynamo (or alternator). Nothing gpes to 'middle' of the dizzy - except the centre HT wire of course!
Could you perhaps type in normal case letters - and not UPPER CASE all the time !

If you've got the wires on the coil right, you can check that power is getting to the points by taking the distributer cap off, then with the ignition on, flick the points open with your fingernail, you should get a small spark across the gap. Cylinder number one is the one at the radiator end, if you need to set the static timing, it's probably best to download the manual.....(The vacuum unit normally faces upwards, but it's possible that the distributer is 180 degrees out)

Hi
Thanks for that.
SORRY FOR SOUTING but without my glass it is easier to read on the computer screen. thank you all very much for the help, advice i will have a go and let you know. I think that it must be the wiring as there is no spark when it is turned over from the main lead coming out of the coil.
Cheers

You could have a duff coil or condenser in the distributor. Its always worth carrying a spare so change them one at a time and see what happens. Remember the principle is to try one thing at a time until you find the solution. If you do everything at once you will not know when you have fixed the problem.
Check the plug leads are in the correct order 1342 anti-clockwise

then played around with the leads and hey presto it ran.
thank you all very much for your help.
it runs rough at idel ut lovely when reved a bit does it just need the timing played with a bit more.
thanks again

Well done!! Good warm feeling when you fix it!! If its a new coil you put on, hope it does better than mine (CI 8040). Died after only 6 weeks! Now replaced with second hand coil as I have more faith in old bits than new!! Enjoy your Moggy!
