"we" are in the market for a nice TR6. Does anyone have any experiance of these and can give any tips on what to lok out for or point me in the direction of a good forum such as this one for them.... Also, considering alternatives to the "6" if anyone has any suggestions in terms of comparable power, styling, price etc..... Limit of £10k. Thanks

Well - I would of course advise the very much better TR7!
Seriously - it handles better , is much easier to work on, uses less fuel, has more interior space (but strictly only 2 seater) - and offers very much better value for money! It also has a very good Forum - although not as good as THIS forum - it's not far behind ! http://www.forum.triumphtr7.com/default.asp

IF I was going for an earlier TR - It would be the TR4A - which I think is the best looker of them all!

The '7' has a great heater - and is a very good long distance cruiser, with your head below the screen and out of the draught (unlike the earlier TRs!) if that helps at all!

I like TR6's but they have always been out of my price range.
With your budget you should find one but suspect it will be "good" rather than "immaculate".
Alternatives - well what about Stag, XJS (straight 6, not V12), Merc SL & Scimitar GTC ? They all might be expensive to run & maintain but probably no worse than a TR6.
A friend has a XJ8 and paid £9500 for a five year old model. He's converted it to LPG but says it did mid 20's on petrol anyway.

I meant XK8. Looking on eBay there are plenty convertibles within your budget - and no worry about the rot you might have on a TR6 or what standard previous welding / restoration.
I'm bias as I like Jags (had a 3.4 S2 XJ6 for 10 years until retirement )

XK8-gimme,gimme!! Thats where my money would go- A classic jag shape-looks like a big cat about to pounce! I know the V12 XJS is reckoned a bit of a moneypit even by jag standards, but...IF... I were not thinking right...I might go for one just for the warm feeling (while its going OK!)

Brilliant cars - I love my Jags, me! Let me know if you want to know anything about the "common faults" on the V8 engines - I did my research before I bought mine!

Or better still buy an X300 - same shape that you're talking about, but the straight-6 AJ16 engine, which is pretty much bullet proof, and you can pick up a minter for £3-4k, less at auction.

I had an XJ40 for 10 years - not as pretty, but just as unburstable, and the cheapest of the lot now.

I am too keen on Jags..... Very keen. Always have been since I was old enough to remember. That's why when I left school I did my apprenticeship at Jag and worked there throughout the development of all the cars from early 80's upto 2000. Also I have owned an XJ40, XJS, X300, X200 and an older DV8..... However, this is not a car that I will be buying (go on, you didn't really think I had 10K spare did you ;-)) Its my Father in Law and he wants to re-live his youth in a hairy chested British sportscar...!!!!!

Well, I think he's set on a 6 but there was always the chance that something we hadn't thought of came up in conversation..... We'll be looking out for one as it seems favourite and we've had good comments from past owners....

They are fine cars - but as earlier - I think the TR4A is by far the best looking car of the lot!
