Speedo problem

A few days back my speedo went mental when i was driving and then suddenly stopped working, so i opened the bonnet to check out the cable, all was well. Then i jacked up the moggie and unscrewed the cable from the connection to the gearbox.

I tried to turn the wire expecting to see the speedo move, but the wire was very tight and could hardly move.

Is this normal? Also it may be a problem within the dashboard, how can i get into the dash to take a look at the connections to the speedo.

I'm not very good with fixing cars!

Thank you,
Rhys

It's certain the cable has destroyed itself! Speedo comes out by loosening screws from either side through small holes in the glovebox liners - then wiggle it out - and unscrew the cable. Try not to dislodge any of the wiring - or the warning lights.
Edit - much later! - it's been pointed out that my use of 'either side' above is not correct and has caused confusion - the screws have of course to be loosened at BOTH sides! And - just to point out - there is NO NEED to remove or loosen the steering column!
