New Owner need help

Hi I am a new owner of an Morris minor two door and I am hoping to put an Alternator on it. What I want to know is do I have to keep the regulator box on the car or can I take it off. And if I can take it off which wires would go where. Sorry if this is a silly thing to ask.

Hi and welcome. Do you know if it is positive or negative earth? If it's still positive, I don't think an alternator will work.

Yes you can take the junction box off. I can't remember which wires need to be connected together but if no one has given a definative answer I will post back in the morning.

You are certainly not the only one to think they are asking stupid questions, I make a firm habit of it, you will find all the help you need on here
I don't know the answer to your question (not such a stupid one, eh?

It's very easy to change to negative earth at the same time as fitting the alternator though.

Original 11AC alternators (with 4TR and 6RA units) could I believe be used +ve earth - hard to find now!
So yes - first step is to convert to -ve earth. Then find a suitable alternator - 16/17/18 ACR Lucas units are readily available very cheaply. You need to make/buy a bracket to supposrt the rear end - although some just use a very long bolt, this doesn't really keep the alternator in line with the drive belt well enough when the tension comes on. The regulator unit can be left in place - just disconnect the D and F wires. New heavy cable from the alternator large spade connector goes directly to the battery side of the starter solenoid. Small connector needs a wire taken to the ignition warning light in the speedo - the other side of which is on the ignition switch ON bus.
