948 or 1098? how do i tell?

hi, i was just wondering how to tell between a 1098 or 948? as im trying to find out witch mine is in my morris minor.

I assume the engine number is missing ?

Take the rocker cover off (two bolts) - and look at the number cast into the top of the cylinder head - if 12G202 then that's a 1098 head, and so it's likely a 1098 engine !

The 1098 engine has a thick steel backplate and the tappet chest cover plate centres slope outwards to the securing bolt. the engine may also have a breather pipe or cannister.
The 948 engine has a thin metal backplate curved at the edges and the tappet chest cover plates are recessed in the centres.

dont you mean 948? for such a simple and unrefined engine the 1098 goes quite well. nothing compared to a more modern engine but still not as slow as you would think
