under coating in boot

Post by vwesch »

Hello I have a 59 convertible. The trunk[boot]area has been covered with a thick tar like undercoat. I am in the states and I know that this practice was fairly common under the car but not inside.
So, the question is: Is this "factory"? Is this a common dealer ad on?

Thanks for the reply. Ive since taken a pressure washer to to trunk/top of fuel tank. Wow what a difference! I can clearly see that must be a factory thing. The sides are black but the center is painted. there is a distinct mask line. Also there is no overspray on the tank. Must have been done with the tank out. Cheers.

It was a 'factory thing' and was a form of sound deadening.

I've also have seen this antidrumming material applied to the floor in saloons. Typically, the undercoating in the boot was applied before painting and therefore is body color. However, I've also have seen it painted black as well as the center piece of the boot floor. I believe this was done by the dealer, so is it considered original?

As this coating was applied before the body colour, it should all be body colour. Any additions by the supplying dealer are not regarded as original, sorry.
