Hi, Yes i know it,s supposed to click but is there a rubber sound insulator between the fuel pump and body of the car as i find it rather annoying . Also it seems to have a life of it's own when even standing idling . It will click one every five seconds then go off like a freight train . I dont think it's the needle valve as the engine speed does'nt vary or bulk. I would'nt mind getting rid of the ticking though. 56 splitty. P.s i thought electric fuel pumps were a quite modern invention. i thought every thing would have been mechanical in the old days?

If this is after being stuck in long traffic queues after a long day then it can be caused by the fuel boiling in the feed pipe so the pump is just running on fumes (called fuel vapourisation).
If it happens when idling for shorter periods when engine has not had much chance to warm up then it's likely to be something different.

Any idea how yours compares to other Minors?
I replaced the pump on my car because it was so loud and annoying.
You can hear the new one (standard SU type) but it ticks more softly.
It may be possible to adjust them to be quieter.

If it really annoys you, make a rubber insulator out of an old car mat and fit it between the pump and body.

It would annoy you a lot more if it didn't tick me thinks

There may be an air leak on the inlet side (or a partial blockage - maybe even filter blocked) which is causing it to pump harder to keep the fuel flowing! hence the 'excessive' clicking. I only hear mine when engine is idling - each click is 10p of fuel!!

The Pump is a replacement pattern part although i hav,nt chucked the old one away (was,nt replaced by me). I,ve blown the line back tank and checked both valves. Going to try it on cold morning drive. As for noise ,i might try somthing later,ta. oh and thanks for the history lesson.

oh it isnt the original lucas type?? maybe it's ebcause it's a later facet type? maybe a picture? because if it's a facet type they keep on clicking!

Ahhh - the pattern ones are nowhere near as good as the originals. Seriously consider cleaning up the SU pump and refitting it - then carry the pattern as a spare.

bmcecosse is right about the pattern pumps.
I'm sure that is what was fitted when I got the car ( I think the cap was blue)
It did the job but much more noisily than the SU pump.
I kept it for a spare.
