i put some modern sound proofing material in the ute a couple of days ago. because its a work in progress i cant hear the difference but what sort of improvement should i expect? its all over the balkhead inside the dashboard, on the ceiling, will be inside the doors. on the floor when i get around to it, i will probably just have foam underlay under the carpets.

Standard Minor sound deadening is pretty useless. Technology has moved on since the 40's and much better materials can be had. You really need a combination of a deadening mat (similar to Dynamat) and a space layer to reduce noise.

Hi there, the only real experiance of sound deadening was trying to restrain over 140db in my old polo. (ah my formative years lol )
Bearing in mind that I ended up with 1/2" thinkness around most of the boot I needed somthing a little cheaper than the commercial products. I found that If you go to your building supplier they probably sell a roll of "aluminium backed bitumen" the ally is pressed in squares. its used in flat roofing.
If you warm the back of the pannel with a heat gun and then apply the sheet (also slightly warmed), then heat the whole lot in situ (it should stick to the warmed pannel), then press it in place (with gloves on)
I found this to be very satisfactory exept for the weight added but this was a large application, ill try and dig some pics out in a bit but the only one ive got online at the mo is this one

Was that fire proof though, ? P2K

not somthing considered in any depth, I suppose that once the tar substance was sufficently heated then it would burn like a wax, using the upolstry as a wick.
by the time this lit I would imagine things would already be pretty disasterous.
Good point though, ill bear that in mind next time im looking at sound deadening.

The cost of 'good' industry standard sound deadening is greater than the poor quality stuff offered by most Minor suppliers.
You should reckon on around £250 worth of materials which will totally transform your car. You will add weight, but its a small price to pay in my opinion, as you will have a nice rattle free environment in which to drive.
S'pose we should look into providing some kits off the shelf !

I've done it a couple of times. I used high quality carpet underlay (fibrous one side, rubber crumb the other) single layer through the car and boot and behind/under the back seat and double layer on the bulkhead. It does make a noticable difference to the engine noise but what was difficult to reduce was the exhaust note.

That would be a good idea as the bulkhead is a nightmare to line

Has anyone tried sound proofing the bulkhead on the engine side?
One of the self adhesive sound deadening products with a foil face should do.
