I've just been given a nikki carb on an A series manifold has anyone used one of these & what are they like for power / efficiency against a HIF 44 ?
I will try it to see what its like but I do like SU's

One way to find out. Fit it and let us know how you get on.
Back in the heydays of tuning minis people fitted all sorts of exotic carbs in the belief that anything was better than the humble SU.

Will do . if it works ok I'll give it a go for a few weeks/months you never know I may get converted

By all means try it - be prepared for many problems and poor fuel consumption.

I used to run a nikki carb on a 1275 midget engined van.
It didn't seem to give as much ooomph as twin SUs but I found the fuel consumption was better as most driving can be done on the 1st barrel with the performance kicking in when you give it some wellie and the 2nd barrel come into play.
The drawback with the one I had was it seemed to have a porous float chamber or some other problem that meant the fuel pump would be working overtime in the morning refilling it

hi richard, i had one on my 1098 and the 1275. it worked well, in teh same way that markyb said. if you aren't ragging it, it will give you good return in mpg, if you open it up, its not quite so good! i liked it, and only stopped using it as i got the dellorto, which is amazing! if only it was set up right!

I gave the carb a try today. It ran ok & pulled cleanly through the revs but definatly down on top end power compaired to the HIF
Curiosity now satisfied so put back to the SU

Thats because its from the H4 carb era and the HIF is a later design and also the carb might not be set up for you engine.

HIF gives no better power than H4/HS4 - it's just better on corners etc with no surging due to the 'Horizontal Integral Float'.
