Section 7 says white or yellow allowable -

Strictly I think this section this might apply to motorbikes so you will have to search the rest of the web site to find what is appicable to cars but doubt if yellow is allowable on motorbikes & threewheelers then it isn't also allowable on 4 wheelers.

I don't Kevin, but son of mine does, I've told him they will attract the police - I hope that has put him off!

My Microcar has yellow bulbs - to be fair though it's early 1980's and bought from France where yellow bulbs are still easilly available.

sect 2 sub sec 11(1) of the road vehicle lighting regs is the legislation to look at The lighting regs are a mass of bits and pieces which used to cause headaches with traffic officers, basically the regs state that you can not show a red light to the front or a white light to the rear, amber is ok.Some of the early fog lights were amber. But having driven in france for many years and changing lights over to yellow(No longer required in france)can say that as far as I am concerned It is dangerous to use yellow unless all others are using yellow if you are using yellow and a car comes towards you with bright modern white lights, there is no way you can see the road ahead ,I would advise your son to forget about it. He would be legal but at great risk of running off the road.A traffic officer could also take the view that the lights were not showing enough illumination and therefore driving without due care and attention could be considered.especially on an unlit rural road.
