help ! what engine?

Post by uniqueaps »

Hi there im new to all this forum stuff, im currently restoring and customising a 1971 morris minor pick up and need help in choosing a suitable new engine for it , it used to have a fiat 2L twin cam before i got my hands on it! but thats long gone now ,shame would like to have kept it! I have a moggy with a 1800 mgb gt engine with gearbox, only prob is its not in great condition. Does anyone know what would be a good porsche chasing option?

How technical do you want to get. By which I mean carbs or injection.
The Toyota 16v or 20 valves are stunning engines with legendary reliability, and will fit into a Minor relatively easily. We fit both the K series and now the Ford Zetec, which are again pretty straightforward to fit, but do cost quite a sum. We favour the 2L Zetec at the moment as its a cheaper package that the K and if you want to tune it then its also cheaper. A standard unit puts out 145bhp, then we offer upgrades to 170,180 and 200bhp all of which are more than adequate. The 170bhp motor produces just under 150flbs of torque, which almost allows you to drive in 5th anywhere and still accelerate.
You can obtain good bhp and torque from the A series, a supercharged motor will see a reliable 160bhp, but will not offer the 40mpg of the Zetec.
If you are not adverse to some serious body mods and chassis building then literally anything can be fitted, V8,V6,V4 etc.

Thanks jonathon, either would be fine, checked out your site before about the k series engines but back then it was not up to date, would like to be able to simply get something that i can fit in quite straight forward, whats the sort of prices involved ? i have seen a few supercharged ones on you-tube and they sound great. Im not so keen on a v8 option the previous owner tried and failed leaving me with a have a bulkhead! regards david.

Cannot talk prices on the forum as its against the T and C's so please either PM or email me.
The site I'm afraid to admit is now very old although the prices and parts have been changed to keep them up to date. If you look at the new site in waiting, just add /preview to the original address you will see the makings of a much better place. We cannot launch until we have found a new employee to run it and the office, so it is still under construction.
Easiest option is the supercharged 1275cc based engine with a 5 spd box and Escort axle plus the relevant suspension and braking upgrades. And of course a solid chassis and body.
Have a look at V Max Scart they are converting one of our customers engines at the moment but only in mild tune of arounf 120-130bhp, still more than enough. I believe that they are charging him £1600 all in, for the charger conversion.
I'd suggest our Maestro crank conversion to suppliment this mod as it offers a far better crank oil seal and a much better breathing system, it also has the advantage of a full dynamic balance, but more info might be best conducted away from this forum

Ta :D 8) The old site carries an advert, but mainly for bodyshop duties. I have decided that I do not want to spend my time in the office anymore, so are now looking for a knowledgeable person with IT skills so that the new site can function smoothly and also allow me more time in the bodyshop.
Drop me in you CV if interested BG, bit of a hike though from Bristol :)

Ahhhh - right, penny drops - I remember it well, as opposed to the 'commonly unique' I suppose!
