Oil Seal: 2.5"odx1.75"id - similar to 1098 timing

Just been digging through my box of new parts left over from jobs I've not yet done and parts that came in the boot of cars I bought.
I found a pair of lip seals, which seemed like timing chain seals.
I just compared them to the 1098 timing chain lip seal, and these ones I found are too big!

Anyone got any ideas what they might be?
Are there any radial lip seals like this in the rear axle??

Yes Ray there are the same type of seals in the rear hubs
but I cannot give you the measurements as I fitted my last
one last year.

I agree with Willie - probably rear hub oil seals. If you change these I found you can still buy the paper gaskets straight from the Rover dealer (in Bath). I used a countersink gently on the rear axle flange bolt holes to remove the factory swarf before refitting the paper gaskets - this ensures a good fit and helps reduce the chance of oil leaks onto your brake shoes.

There is also a similar seal on the rear diff drive that is a very slightly different size so take care in case you are sold the wrong one by mistake. I found it was a real pain to change as the nut behind the propshaft was very difficult to undo and I made the mistake of pushing the seal in too far so it leaked - I had to do it all again! You know if it leaks as the diff oil is sprayed all around the bottom of the car by the prop shaft.

Good luck

thanks wb
now that's given me a thought! My car already sprays oil from the rear end of the prop, and I get drips of oil from the diff housing onto my drive.
I am in the process of doing the gearbox seals, next will be the engine.
I'll add the diff input shaft to the list of things I haven't done yet..

Yes the rear hub oil seal and the 'final drive'oil seal have
different part numbers. What you need to undo the nut
on the pinion is a stout bar which bolts to the flange and
reaches the ground. Surprisingly, there is no locking tab
on this nut, only a spring washer.

Having just renewed a rear bearing and oil seal I can measure the old seal if it will help to identify size, Ray.

Ok, here is the size as printed on the seal----64 - 44- 9.5, refering to 0/d - I/d - thickness. The imperial size, just using a rule is 2.5''
x 1 11/16'' x 3/8''. The 1 11/16'' measurement is not precise.
