Cross member end section?

Does anybody have any images of the very end piece of a central cross member.
The ones on my 69 2 door are somewhat worse for wear and as I am replacing all the sill sections on the off side I need to do this bit as well. I have bought an item from MGM spares, which according to the diagram is the correct piece, it’s calling itself a jacking point and consist of a small section of box member with a bend plate welded to the top. Now the remains of mine seemed to be made out of a pair of channel shaped pieces back to back, one welded each side of the cross member, so this one must fit totally differently, I suspect I will have to cut a section out of the cross member and weld it in. Was there a change in the design at some point or has mine been rather poorly repaired in the past with some totally wrong sections?. The latter would be true to form for it as I’m slowly finding out the more I cut it apart!

The jacking point is just that. It welds onto the crossmember end (though personally I wouldn't bother because the original jack was a liability).

Thanks Alex, I 'think' I see what is happening there is a notch taken out of the end of the cross member and the jacking point box member welds into it.
Though on your's it looks like the sill sections are deeper and would foul the jacking point. :-?

No, the jacking point goes under the crossmember end. It's not structural and doesn't attach to the sill.

Ignore the sills on mine - they've been bodged in the past. I had to make some fancy custom repair sections to match them up to the crossmember end.<br>Image<br>

yes I'm seeing it now thanks, just found this photo on an old thread, posted by 'flying'
Wish I had looked earlier as I wouldn't have bothered with the jacking point. I will still need to rebuild the end of the cross member.. oh well :roll:

Here's an old photo showing a crossmember end with a jacking point on it (before I cut it off). It looks like it does attach to the sill in a couple of places actually.<br>Image<br>

I've seen references to the original crossmembers being laminated -does that mean it's "layered" ? If so is that vertical/horizontal layering or something else?

They are made from two pressings spot welded back-to-back, plus a strip along the bottom. The repair panel I used is the same construction.

So - repairing a well rusted one will not be very easy. may be better to trim right back - and fit the repair section shown in the first picture. More likely to have 'solid' metal to weld onto!

When doing the cross member ends, cut as far back as you dare. I went right up to the torsion bar mounting points. Any further and a lot of careful measuring would have been required.....something i try to avoid!

Aye - but the T bar mounting points are where you NEED the new strong metal!
