Physiotherapy?

Post by southerly95 »

I wonder there are any physio's (or fitness instructor's etc) in the MMOC that could advise?

As a young man in the late 60's and 70's I maintained my own cars and getting up and down and underneath the car was not a problem physically. Then came 25+ years of lease cars through my job and never thinking I would maintain a car again - until we got our 65 convertible 2 years ago and it all came back to me and I started it over again.

Prob is this, I can get down ok but to get up from the floor I put my hands on the deck and push myself upright. However all my weight is on my shoulders and the left one is quite painful. Gone are the days when I could get up cross legged without using my hands!

What other ways are there of getting up from the floor? I know it may seem a daft question but the answer is not obvious to me. Many thanks.

PS I can't put a pit in my garage which would be the best solution.

Im still young but 6`6" tall.
I was also in an accident giving me the pleasure of whiplash.
In the warmer months im fine but come winter I make sure I wrap up warm (ive still got my old work jacket with quilted innerds) sometimes Ill stretch before and quite often after. Most of my pain is in my spine so if im about to do a big lift ill hang from the rafters in my garage for 30 sec with my arms straight (i need to bend my legs though lol), by doing this im just making sure every thing is loose and stretched.
I try and reach up to things as much as possible so if im working on a door handle, ill neal and stretch upwards rather than standing and bending.
There are keeling pads that help too but prolly wont help with a shoulder problem.
I always try and keep some tripple walled corrigated card* in the garage to lie on if the floor is cold because it stops the floor zapping all your body heat.
I keep trying to convince the missis that coffe helps but shes not buying it :P

p.s. good to see someone else online at this time :)

*the tripple walled card should look like this when you look at the end

Quite often pallets with semi fragile stuff in them use this to surround the stock to protect it, once delivered its just thrown away. (can you say FREEBIES!!!)

My humble advice after having back problems:

One thing to remember when getting up is to always roll onto your side. Head on floor [pillow underneath if possible].

Relax your body. Don't hold your breath.

Lead with your head, still lying on your side, easing yourself up gradually, with your arms.

[Work out which side is easiest with your sore shoulder].

Once your trunk is lifted, bend your knees.

Ease yourself into the kneeling position.

Relax again and breath easy throughout the movements.

Gently move up to standing using your arms and legs.

It might sound odd but, I believe it helps to 'warn' your body that you are about to do something like this. It aids the focus on doing it right and not too quickly.

Hope this makes sense. I'm 'woozed' on painkillers after surgery on my hand yesterday zzzzzzzzzzzzz

Get intouch if I can help and perhaps consider seeing a physio/osteopath. I know a superb osteopath but he's in Steeple Morden.

Take care.

Yes - I roll on side and then work my way upwards. And yes - old cardboard and/or carpet on the floor. But beware if welding - it burns !
