Yep - rotor arm runs anti-clock, so you turn the dizzy forwrad to advance the timing. Thought you had fancy Aldon dizzy with super advance curve built in Ian ?

I do, but it still needs timing in. I had a play to try and get gas working. But with no success yet.
When I turned it clockwise it started missing on tickover. Seem to remember my dear old Dad saying to turn dizzie one waytill revs decreased and then turn other way till they decreased again, midway between the two was were you wanted to be. Then reset tickover speed.
Trouble is with mine when I set tickover to what I think is right. It is OK till I press the clutch to engage gear, then revs drop off that much it stalls. Could this be a possible thrust washer problem?

Well there is always a drag from the clutch - carbon thrust and yes it pushes the crank onto the thrust washers. Basically - stay off the clutch as much as possible! Yes - best idle speed is best idle ignition setting - but best RUNNING setting is when there is just the slightest trace of light pinking on heavy load - then back it off very slightly. If they are not the same - then you may need to compromise on the best idle setting - after all, how long does it spend idling compared to running.
