The nut on my clutch adjusting rod is always slipping. Its an easy fix but have bought a domed nut for it. Question is... what does the domed nut do? Why will it not slip?
I had thought about leaving the nut thats there, using a spring washer and then the domed nut to stop it slipping.
All advice much appreciated! Thx
PS all... am sitting with my brand new baby girl whilst I type
Are you referring to an acorn nut (which looks like a dome on top of a nut) or a nylon locking nut?
I think your talking about the nylon locking nut. Basically the nylon increases the friction between the bolt and the nut and makes it a harder to get on, but more importantly harder to get off.
Thx for congrats baby lovely and big sister (19 mths) loving her too.
Domed nut doesnt appear to have any nylon - its very smooth and shiny and has a little ridge between the dome and the nut. Ordered it thinking it would be obvious why it would help, but once it arrived realised I have no idea how to use it!
You don't need a spring washer. If you look closely at the arm sticking out of the gearbox, the front side of it has a depression around the hole - the rounded part of the dome nut goes in there. As BG says there should be an ordinary nut too that you tighten up against the front of the dome nut to stop it moving.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.
Had a go.. the nut that is there IS a domed one, it just wont stay. Will have to get the right size of nut to be a locking one. The domed one that I bought doesnt fit the rod! (Typical Morris style...). Guess will have to go making adjustments for a wee while longer!
you could take the existing one off, fit the new one (might as well use the new part) and then when that is where you want it then turn the old nut around and lock it against the new one (flat to flat)
You can use anything for a locknut, even an "acorn" nut
