Gearbox crunching

Hi all,

I have just put my 1958 948cc Minor back on the road after a 4 year complete rebuild and re-spray. It went straight through the MOT and I have now done about 100 miles with no problems (touches wood)

The only issue I have is the gear box crunching a bit when I come out of first gear, it does it when I go into nuetral so it is not when it goes into second. It does it hot or cold. All other gear changes are normal, including going into first. It does not come out of any gears which seems to be a common problem

The gearbox is painted gold and is a smooth casting.

Is this normal, can I do anything to stop this?

Thanks

What oil did you put in the gearbox?
It should be 20/50 engine oil.
Using gearbox oil will give this symptom.

Engine oil I think, it was a long time ago. I will have a look when I get the chance, I am in China at the moment.

Thanks

Check that the clutch is releasing properly, slight oil contamination might cause it to stick a little and so cruch on the way out at it tries to spin up/down.

Crunch on the way out of first is very unusual - I would try an oil change as first remedy - and 10W40 will drag less than 20w50.

Worn reverse gear idler shaft or bushes for same.
