my new project so far..........

Post by turbominor »

This is SPP695, a fine example of how to pass an mot with underseal....!
Has taken 4 days of scraping underseal off to find the true horrors....

Managed to pull the 'mint' rear wings off by hand, bolts left in place untouched..

I have bought worse!! ;-)

I really hope you didn't pay over the odds. Most of those jobs look normal, but the rear wing flanges are something I'd want to avoid.

As for the lashings of underseal to get an MOT - my pickup is (was) in worse nick than those photos, and I think the seller was a bit embarassed about the condition and had struggled to sell. Fortunately I got it at a fair price (very cheap, but no bargain).
I broke down plenty on the way home, but after a decent service managed the LEO. I was fairly lucky not to go up in flames though as the miriad of wiring mods were done by a blind pyromaniac.

Do you still need an auto or did those issues go away? I vaguely recall some knee problems?

I've seen quite a few flange repairs done with several pieces of shaped steel welded in. I'm sure this would be stronger and longer lasting than welding in nasty pieces of Sri lankan made wafer thin 'steel'.

Blimey, looks like you have some work there. Those arch flanges and C pillar sections are possibly the worst parts to repair due to the crapness of repair panels. Theres a few pics on my photobucket album of how i did it if that helps. www.photobucket.com/yamahafs1e

My mog was in about the same nick, maybe slightly worse underneath, and it had been off the road since 1980, cant believe yours had an MOT!
Ultimate rust cure for your moggy....paint it brown, at least that way you dont notice the rust as much!!

I can believe it! I've bought some shocking stuff over the years with MOT - and apart from once I've got what I expected. The one time I got caught out was a 4 door full of fibreglass (back in 1992). Not only did I look at it first, I also took a mate who knew more about them than I did.
If the underseal looks neat enough, it can fool anyone on the right day :(

My Viva was filled with filler and needed lots of work, but lots of nice neat underseal and some reasonably well sprayed paint by the previous owner and it looked okay :-/
