Petrol problem

Coming home last week the car suddenly started juddering and then slowly ground to a halt, I found there was no petrol getting through to the pump, after a bit of fiddling I found the there was an air lock in the tank so this was solved by taking off the cap. Inspection of the cap revealed that there is actually no breather hole so how exactly does this work? is there a breather hole elsewhere that's blocked?

As far as I'm aware, the standard cap has a breather.

hi, thats what I assumed, but mine has a later locking cap which states on the bottom that it doesnt have a breather, I've had the car about a year and a half with this cap and this problem has only just started so there must be another hole somewhere thats got blocked, maybe the new breather is just a home DIY jobby that I'll have to figure out myself

It should have a breather - you've just been lucky up to now !

Had the same problem when I first had the MM. I fitted a locking fuel cap and shortly after when I was dressed up and going out for a meal it cut out. I traced the problem, more by luck than judgement to the fuel cap and after replacing it got enough fuel through to get me home. When more suitably dressed and in daylight I had another look at the filler cap and saw that it was fitted with a filter / breather in the centre which had become blocked (2nd hand cap). I ran a small drill up the middle which cured the problem
