drove bacck on a lon run yestereday and my ameter was doing funny things the needle was not staying on 0 it was moving all over the place then stabalised.then the charging light came on.i could not see anything obvious so i made my way home.i took it off and cleaned up the altinator degeresed it,put it back on and it was status quw.i reved it a bit and the light went out,i then reved the you know what out of it and i was getting positive charge.to test it i switched the ignition off left the lights on for a minute.then switched on and the charge rate was quite something any ideas.

The little field brushes wear out - and the first signs are intermittent charge. Cheap to buy and very easy to fit. Is it a Lucas 15/16/17 ACR alternator ? Other possibility is a loose cable in the spade connector going to the alternator - that had me fooled for a while until I tugged it hard one day - and it came away from the connector.

i wondered if it could be something as simple as that reconnecting might have done the job we shall see

Grab a spare alternator (and a set of brushes) at the next autojumble. Can often get the alternator for £1 !!

i think i have found out why i keep frying altinators.i had the conversion done when i baught the car.i was running the engine with the bonnet up,and i noticed when you revved the engine, the fan belt was flexing sideways as well as up and down.i switched off and noticed the pullies were not in line.i have packed out the gap with some washers and braught the altinator closer to the rad so the pullies are in line.i have got a new one ordered, would this be the reason for the failures..

Well - it won't help - but that would tend to knacker the bearings and not the electrical side of things. 'New one ordered' - oh dear - where from ? I have had great success with autojumble units at £1 !! I fit them on the car - if they work they stay on, and the one that came off goes in the spares drawer. So far - all have worked and several spares 'in stock'!
