Running to hot

I have just put a new engine in today. it all seems very nice apart from it seems to be running very hot.

what could be the cause? I think the thermostat is ok, but I will change it tomorrow anyway. If that fails what else could be the problem?

I think my temperature gauge is OK, as on the old engine always run bang on in the middle.

here is a badly drawn pic of where the needle is going.

When you say new do you mean new to the car or just purchased from supplier?

If your going to change the thermostat you might as well spend a while flushing the system backwards and forwards until the water flows clean. Simply take one of the heater hoses off and flush it both ways.

Did you use the temperature sender from the old engine or one that came with the new one? They are supposed to be matched for the gauge to read accurately.

no same temperature sender unit (the engine did not have one)

changed the thermostat and it have improved a incy bit.

giving it a run to dover tomorow, it will be is first long(ish) run, so I will see what it is like after that. (and stop and let her cool down if she gets to hot)

At a pinch - run it without any stat fitted to see what happens. This should not be done permanently - but will be better than overheating the 'new' engine!

seems to be the same still.

could it be a problem with the timing?

Does it feel or smell hot? Or even sound hot? Are you loosing any water?

If no or don't know to the above then should be OK.

well obviously it feels hot  but not "steaming hot" I did not lose a drop of water. Dont know what you mean by sound hot?

it needs tuning anyway, as it is a little "lumpy" when cold, so I may as well do the timing to be on the safe side.

Have you checked the head gasket?

Well - seriously retarded timing can cause hot running - as can too weak a mixture. Advance the timing till you get pinking - then back it off slightly, and have a look at the spark plugs. Should be nice light beige - if white then dangerously weak.
