running on

Hello

I'm a new Morris owner (new driver, in fact) and I'm finding that when I turn off the engine on my (very lovely) 1968 Traveller after a tricky parallel park (okay, I need more practice!), the engine runs on for a while. It seems that the more times I shunt the car back and forth, the longer the run-on. I did a particularly bad park this morning and the engine ran on for about twenty juddering, protesting seconds after swithc-off. Is this normal, or should I get this checked out? Could I be making some novice mistake (other than misjudging my turns and angles!)?

No. it's not normal. I'd suggest you get the ignition timing checked. Also check the water level in the radiator as running too hot would be a contributing factor.

The first thing to do is check the speed of the tickover. If it is too fast,
coupled with possible overheating due to your manouevering you are liable to experience run on. If you have a dynamo then the charging light should be just glimmering at tickover so lower the revs until that
happens.

Welcome Jamesy,

I can't offer any advice..... just saying welcome and, in my experience, there are lots of people on here that are willing to help.

Enjoy your car :)

PS Any photos?

It could be running a little rich, so checking the mixture strength would be my first port of call. Get yourself a Gunson's Colourtune to check the mixture properly, but a good rule of thumb is to lift the tiny damper pin beneath the carb'. Have a look in any good manual (BMC, Haynes Book of Lies &c - I have a rather nice manual from the Pitman 'Book of...' series which covers all the things a numpty like me needs to check).

Also, if you notice it doing shuddering and stuttering after you've turned off, try pressing the clutch right down - that often provides enough resistance to kill the engine and stop it running on.

Do you use a fuel additive? I find that if I dont put it in the blue Minor that it will run on after its turned off. Worth a try!
