USB on Macintosh

Post by Squiggle »

Hi

I appear to be running USB 1.5.6 from the days when I only had OS 9.0.

Recognises my new digital camera ok.

I now run OS 10.3.9 and 9.something, side by side.

I still use OS 9 to be able to use some applications that are not compatible with OS 10. Can't afford to upgrade too much.

My Mac is crying out for me to delete files and I want to buy a memory stick to store some images.

Seems like I need to have USB 2.0.

I'm getting mind boggled at what to download.

http://www.misco.co.uk/indexuk.asp? have been recommended for purchasing the 'stick'.

Why not buy a separate hard drive? I have a small USB hub [won't run my scanner etc] so end up swapping USB leads around. Can live with that for now. But assumed a 'stick' is more practical.

Wondering if I install USB 2.0 will it 'throw' other things out of sync?

My G4 is getting on and I don't want to 'upset' it.....

Other storage = Syquest but need to go to OS 9 to use it.

Imation Superdisk drive......VERY slow.

Does anyone know which is are the better 'sticks' to buy?
Something around £30.

Thanks for any advice and please don't laugh at my ignorance

Thanks Kevin.

All sorted. Stick ordered.

It seems that some of these USB devices are 'backwards compatible' to my USB 1 software....... :)

Will treat the MAC to some more memory too.

All USB 2 devices should be backwards compatible to USB 1.1 - they will just run a lot slower.

Hi Alex,

Hmmm.

So, I should really upgrade to USB 2.0.

Is it just a case of downloading an upgrade or will my OS 9 + OS 10

be 'disturbed'?

It's not just software, you would need to add a physical USB 2 interface card to your computer. Which machine do you have? Not many of them can be upgraded, and I wouldn't hold out much hope of it working with OS9 in any case.

If I were you I would stick with USB 1.1 and put up with the slow file transfers until I could afford to buy a more modern machine and drop OS9.

I had a feeling this could upset the applecart!

Apple Mac G4 400. Can that be upgraded?

I don't need it to work directly with OS9. I can use OS9 when the images are on the computer.

Don't want to drop OS9 as some of my applications would have to be replaced and that could be rather expensive! As well as a new computer.

I might have to stick to the slow file transfers and buy some more memory for the beast. I've got a 64MB AND 128MB in there, so a bit more would help eh?

I hate this forced upgrading.....

Just thought......CD burner might be the way to go but I have no idea how much that could cost......off to do some research.....

Many thanks for your advice.

Have a good day.

A generic PCI USB 2 card might work under OSX if you're lucky, but I probably wouldn't bother.

And yes, 192MB RAM is very low for OSX. I've got the maximum 1.12GB in my old G4 iBook and I think it would still benefit from more. Hoping to get a new Macbook with 4GB in it soon...

If you don't have a CD/DVD writer already then they are worth having. I think you should be able to put an internal PATA one in your machine if you have a free drive bay for it (or an existing CD ROM you can take out).

Who'd have thought one could get such help on a Morris Minor Owners Club site? Wonderful.

Just found this in my System folder:

AppleUSBHub:

Version: 2.1.5
Last Modified: 04/04/2005 06:54
Get Info String: 2.1.5, Copyright Apple Computer, Inc. 2000-2004
Location: /System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext
kext Version: 2.1.5
Loaded: Yes
Valid: Yes
Authentic: Yes
Dependencies: Satisfied

So if my USB HUB is 2.1.5............

Does that mean my computer is ok and if I stick the stick into the hub it could run faster?

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick...?

Hope I'm not boring you
:)

Will do as you suggest and 'feed' with more memory and research a CD burner as I have a bay free for it.

No, that's just the version of the driver.

Click on the Apple menu, then About this Mac, then More Info..., then USB.

If you have a USB 2 interface, there will be an item in the USB Device Tree called "USB High-Speed Bus"

I'm pretty sure your machine only has USB 1.1 ports (that model /is/ nearly ten years old after all).

0 items for 'USB High-Speed Bus'.

OK that's clear then.
