Racing engine, red hot down pipe...HELP

I,ve just fitted lumenition MTK003 to my 68 moggie which has just undergone a long restoration.
The engine starts 1st time but revs like hell, and the exhaust down pipe glows red hot which is alarming so I turn the engine off pretty quick. I fiddled with the carb which did improve it a bit, but when I try to give some throttle the engine begins to stall and jump about. On turning off the engine it runs on a bit and then back fires
I checked the timing as per the manual ie No 1cylinder at the top of its stroke and the rotor arm points to No1. The strobe tells me the timing is ok, although because the engine is racing its probably a false reading.
the engine has stood for 10 years and I have never run it since putting it back in the car and fitting the electronic ignition, so I dont know whether I would have had the problem with conventional points fitted.
I'm not a mechanic, but I do have a bit of knowledge of the basics but thats all
I thank any of you for your help in advance as I have problems logging on to the message board and may not be able to reply
